ある日、知り合いの雲仙市職員さんが、諫早から雲仙岳が見えると「ああ、地元に帰ってきたなって思う」と話していた。この職員さんはいろいろなところへ出張をすることも多い人だったので、雲仙岳を見るたびに、地元が一番だと再認識していたのではないかと思う。

仕事で諫早・大村方面に行っていると、天気がいい日は、諫早と大村の市境あたりから雲仙岳がひょっこり視界に入ってくることがあり、その度にこの職員さんの言葉を思い出していた。

考えてみると、私も、県央での仕事が増えてから、海を挟んだ諫早市小長井町や高来町から見える雲仙岳、出張で乗った特急列車から見える雲仙岳をスマホで撮影しては、SNSに「最近は遠くから故郷を見る機会が増えた」とか、「故郷は遠きにありて思うもの」とかポエムのように呟いていたではないか。（近い場所だけど）

雲仙市の人にとっても母なる山「雲仙岳」。過去には大きな災害もあったが、活火山は肥沃な大地やきれいな水、そして雲仙市には欠かせない温泉という恵みも与えてくれている。知らないうちにどこかで共存しているのだ。そこにどしんと鎮座してくれているから、私たち地元の人たち、そして雲仙を離れた人たちの「帰る目印」になっているのかなと思う。

ちなみにこの写真が撮影されたのは、雲仙市のお隣、諫早市森山町の島鉄「諫早東高校駅」（名称が変わりました）。島鉄を学生時代利用していた人たちにも見慣れた風景かもしれない。

The View of Mt. Unzen

“Ah, back home,” my friend who works for Unzen City Hall said to me, as we were taking in the view of Mt. Unzen from Isahaya City.

City Hall staff often goes on business trips all over the country. But whenever my friend sees Mt. Unzen from a distance, he must realize that his hometown is the best place to be.

Since I’ve had more work in Isahaya and Omura lately, I’ve taken photos of Mt. Unzen from Konagai Town and Takagi Town, which are across Isahaya Bay from the mountain. I’ve also taken pictures from the windows of the express train on the way home from a business trip and posted them on social media along with captions like, “Viewing my home town from a distance these days.” and, “Home is where the heart is.”

Mt. Unzen is a symbol of home for the people of Unzen City. Though it has been the source of some large-scale disasters in the past, the active volcano also graces the area with fertile ground, clean water, and hot springs, which are indispensable to the city. Thanks to Mt. Unzen’s enduring presence, those of us who may be far from our hometown will always have this symbolic landmark waiting to welcome us upon return.

This picture was taken from Isahaya East High School Station, a stop on the private Shimatetsu railway line. For those who rode that line during their school days, this scenery might be very familiar.
